About the Gallery:
Artery Gallery was opened in October of 2004 and is curated and managed by the student Society of Fine Artists (SOFA) at the University of Waterloo. As a visual arts collective we support vital contemporary art practices and initiatives by student artists. We hope to fulfill a responsibility to the artistic community by providing a venue for outstanding emerging art.
Artery’s mandate is to provide a space for exhibitions, along with technical support and promotional assistance. We also wish for this space to be a platform for artist talks and discussion about art within our community. SOFA encourages innovation among artists of diverse media and approaches. Artwork is selected on the base of artistic excellence, and our hope is to encourage an open dialogue between the artist and the public. The City of Kitchener is highly supportive of emergent art by generously donating this space.
Exhibitions change monthly and feature work by students and alumni of the University of Waterloo’s Fine Arts program, and SOFA occasionally invites artists to exhibit their work from other universities.
Artery is run on the basis of volunteer work and is supported and financed by fundraising initiatives and the generosity of the City of Kitchener, The Faculty of Arts, and the Department of Fine Arts of the University of Waterloo.
Artery Gallery History:
The Artery Gallery, located on 158 King St., was donated to the University of Waterloo’s Fine Arts Department by the city of Kitchener. Artery Gallery was constructed during the summer of 2004, and had its Grand Opening in October 2004. The collaborative exhibition called ‘Antecedents’ featured works by the university of waterloo Fine Arts Alumni and was curated and managed by the Student Society of Fine Artists (SOFA), as would be all the following events held at the Gallery.
As a Visual Arts collective we support vital contemporary art practices and initiatives by student artists. We hope to fulfill a responsibility to the artistic community by providing a venue for outstanding emerging art.
Artery’s madate is to provide a space for exhibitions, promote an amalgamation of individuals within our community, along with technical support and promotional assistance from Artery’s founders and supporters. We also wish for this space to be utilized as a platform for artist talks and discussions of art within the community, maintaining a close relationship to events within surrounding areas of Kitchener Waterloo and keeping a base with the city of Kitchener, so thankful for their generosity.
SOFA encourages innovation among artists of diverse media and approaches which is apparent in the selection of shows ongoing at the Artery Gallery. Artwork is selected on the basis of artistic excellence and our hope it to encourage an open dialogue between the artist and the public, with the goal to reach out to the community by gaining appreciaton and interest. Ongoing information on artistic events and functions is kept at the gallery for everyone to see and take for their own pleasure. SOFA is highly encouraging and appreciative of the Arts within the community and makes it a goal to attend various events around the community.
We thank the City of Kitchener for being so highly supportive of emergent art and the idea of a downtown revitalization by promoting the Arts, and by generously donating this space, Artery Gallery, at 158 King.
Exhibitions are on a monthly rotation, the shows feature current student work anywhere from first to fourth year, graduate students, and the Alumni of the Fine Arts Department. SOFA occasionally invites artists to exhibit work from other Universities, switching venues for display, as part of the exposure and integration of variety within the region to promote the visual Arts.
Artery is run by the members of SOFA, guided with the helpful knowledge of supporting instructors and Faculty of the University of Waterloo’s Fine Arts Department, and many individuals from the City of Kitchener. Funding is made possible by the fundraising initiatives and the generosity of all our founders and supporters.
